Cadmium phytoavailability in soils and evaluation of extractant effectiveness using an isotope technique Scientia Agricola
Guerra,Fernando; Trevizam,Anderson Ricardo; Fior,Rafael Carvalho; Muraoka,Takashi.
Large areas of land are nowadays contaminated by heavy metals and, it is therefore, important to monitor their levels in soils. Vegetables act as transfer mechanisms of such contaminants from soils to higher levels in the food chain. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of chemical extractants by the L-value method for Cd phytoavailability using the 109Cd radionuclide. In a greenhouse experiment, rocket plants (Eruca sativa L.) were cultivated in pots with samples from Typic Hapludox and Typic Quartzipsamment soils. Cadmium concentrations ranging from 0 to 16 mg kg-1 were added to a 200 mL solution containing 148 kBq 109Cd. The available Cd in the soil was extracted by DTPA, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3, and a mixture of organic acids (acetic,...

Fast hydrodynamic model for medium- and long-term dispersion in seawater in the English Channel and southern North Sea, qualitative and quantitative validation by radionuclide tracers ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Dumas, Franck.
The database for medium- and long-term model validation using Sb-125 released by the La Hague reprocessing plant includes 1400 measurements performed between 1987 and 1994 in the English Channel and the North Sea and data for each release since 1982. Antimony-125 has a conservative behaviour in water masses over a period of several years. These data can be used qualitatively and quantitatively to compare the measured concentrations with the calculated ones and quantities of tracers. Tritium measurements are also available for model calibration. A two-dimensional hydrodynamic model has been developed to allow repetitive long-term simulations. This model uses a database of residual tidal currents calculated using the Lagrangian barycentric method [Salomon,...

Improving Knowledge of Water-Mass Circulation in the English Channel Using Radioactive Tracers ArchiMer
Bailly Du Bois, Pascal; Rozet, M; Thoral, K; Salomon, Jean-claude.
New tools are now available to make more accurate deteminations of radio-tracer distribution : - Repositioning of station locations at the same tide reference-time, giving a homogeneous spatial data set, coupled with the possibility of interpolating and quantifying the amounts of dissolved radioactivity flowing through the English Channel. - The first measurements of tritium (3H) in seawater on a large scale in the English Channel demonstrate that this fully conservative radionuclide is a clearly identifiable marker of industrial releases. Recent campaigns carried out during the FluxManche II CCE (1994) programme show the general distribution of dissolved radionuclides 137Cs, 134Cs, 125Sb and 3H in the English Channel and Irish Sea. The re-utilization of...

Random and systematic spatial variability of 137Cs inventories at reference sites in South-Central Brazil Scientia Agricola
Correchel,Vladia; Bacchi,Osny Oliveira Santos; Reichardt,Klaus; De Maria,Isabella Clerici.
The precision of the 137Cs fallout redistribution technique for the evaluation of soil erosion rates is strongly dependent on the quality of an average inventory taken at a representative reference site. The knowledge of the sources and of the degree of variation of the 137Cs fallout spatial distribution plays an important role on its use. Four reference sites were selected in the South-Central region of Brazil which were characterized in terms of soil chemical, physical and mineralogical aspects as well as the spatial variability of 137Cs inventories. Some important differences in the patterns of 137Cs depth distribution in the soil profiles of the different sites were found. They are probably associated to chemical, physical, mineralogical and biological...
